Over time, our tooth enamel starts to discolour, this is a natural part of the ageing process.
Teeth can also be stained due to genetics and your general lifestyle habits and diet. For example, consumption of dark staining food and drink such as tea, coffee, red wine, cola and staining spices, as well as habits such as smoking.
Sometimes, our teeth can change colour as the result of damage or previous dental work, such as root canals, while certain long-term medications can also darken the teeth over time from the inside.
With Philips Zoom! tooth whitening, a bright and confident smile is now more readily available and affordable for everyone. Our dentists can restore the natural whiteness of your teeth easily, comfortably and with the utmost convenience.

Whitening is a semi-permanent procedure, if you don’t whiten your teeth after your initial course of treatment, your tooth shade will naturally go back to its original shade. But don’t worry, for most people this takes about 12 months.
To prevent this we advise you use your whitening trays at home for a few nights, every few months to top-up and maintain your results.
If your diet is high in staining foods or you’re a smoker your results may not last as long, you may require more regular maintenance whitening at home to combat recurring discolouration.
Philips Zoom! whitening products also include ACP, which has been shown to reduce whitening fade back.
WHITENING A DEAD TOOTH
A single front tooth can become discoloured as a result of a previous root canal treatment or a history of a traumatic injury. This leads to the nerve dying off and means the tooth becomes either a caramel brown colour or a grey dull colour. To help treat and cure this we can complete INTERNAL WHITENING to lift the shade of the tooth to blend with the rest of your smile.
This is where either a new root canal treatment is performed or a previously root treated tooth is modified to allow space for you to place the whitening gels within the inside of the tooth. You change this gel at regular intervals throughout the day and over a few days this lifts the colour from the inside out.
Purely bleaching from the outside isn’t often strong enough to penetrate this deep staining which comes from deep within the tooth.
A dead tooth can present with any of the following symptoms:
Gray, brown, or black discoloration in part or all of the tooth
Pain
Swelling
Sensitivity
Pain and discoloration are the two main symptoms that your tooth may be dead. A tooth can go through this process quickly or slowly, and the resulting discoloration and discomfort can likewise come on at a similar pace. It is, however, possible for a tooth to become dead without causing you any pain.
If you think you have a dead tooth or are concerned about a single dark tooth speak to one of our dentists to discuss your options.
